201 Bangladeshi Nationals Caught Living Illegally In Mumbai

Separately, a total of 201 Bangladeshi nationals have been caught living illegally in Mumbai this year, with 131 FIRs registered against them. Of these, 20 individuals have been deported, while documents of around five to seven were found to be authentic, leading to their direct repatriation to Bangladesh, police said on Saturday (February 8), as per news agency ANI.

Seven Bangladeshi nationals, including four women, were arrested in Mumbai on Friday for allegedly residing in India without valid documents, a police official said, as per news agency PTI.

The accused have been identified as Sohang Ashir Mulla (26), Zahidul Islam Imul (26), Noyam Afzal Hussain Sheikh (25), Alamin Sheikh (23), Suma Jahigir Alam Tutul (24), Tawmina Akhtar Raju (35), and Salma Moksad Ali (35). They had been living in Mahul, Chembur, for nearly five years, the official added.

During questioning, the seven admitted that they were Bangladeshi nationals and had been staying in India without valid documents since March 2020. They have been booked under the Foreigners Act and the Passport Act.

The RCF police station was conducting further investigations into the case.

In Uttar Pradesh, previously, a Bangladeshi Hindu couple and their four-year-old child were detained for allegedly entering India illegally via Nepal on Wednesday, police said. The couple had arrived in Nepal on 28 January with visas valid until 10 February before crossing into India and seeking shelter in Gabhiya Saharai village, a Terai region settlement known for housing displaced Bengali families, local officials stated, as per PTI.

Ashok Pal Singh, Station House Officer (SHO) of Madhotanda police station, confirmed that intelligence agencies provided input leading to their detention. "The family's movements over the past week are being investigated," he said. The couple reportedly told police that they fled Bangladesh due to increased persecution of minorities following a change in government.
