In a shocking incident, a village panchayat in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar allegedly ordered an elderly man to be thrashed with shoes after he was accused of eve-teasing a 26-year-old woman, police said on Monday.
The incident occurred on March 15 in Mahavalipur, Charthawal area when the woman had gone to relieve herself, and the 60-year-old accused allegedly harassed her.
It is being told that the victim girl of Kashyap community had gone outside the village to throw cow dung. It is alleged that during this time, the old man named Tirathpal of Jat community forcibly took the girl to the room of a tubewell built in a nearby field, where he tried to rape the girl.
However, the victim somehow managed to escape from the clutches of the accused and reached her home and told her family about the incident. The victim's family reached the police station and gave a written complaint letter against the accused and demanded action, while a local panchayat was also held in the village after the incident.
The panchayat ordered that Tirathpal be beaten with five shoes as punishment, however, the accused's uncle settled the matter by hitting Tirathpal with two shoes.
A video of the same incident, which has surfaced on social media, purportedly shows an elderly man striking another man with shoes.
What SHO Said?
Police have registered a case against Tiratpal under Section 76 (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on the woman's complaint.
Station House Officer (SHO) Rajesh Dhangar confirmed that an FIR has been filed and that the accused is currently absconding, PTI reported. "We are searching for him. However, no official complaint regarding the panchayat's decision has been received," he told the news agency.
