Udaipur's Madhuban area was gripped with communal tension after a class 10 student who is said to be a Muslim stabbed his classmate, a Hindu, at a government school on Thursday. The accused minor, who had fled after the attack, has been detained. 


Agitated by the incident, the Hindu right wing outfits gathered in the region and vandalised a shopping mall. They set fire to at least three cars parked in a garage and even indulged in stone pelting. As the situation turned violent, the Udaipur Police had to lathi-charge the protestors and impose Section 144 in the area.


The injured student, Devraj, is under observation in an ICU, District Collector Arvind Poswal told news agency PTI.


Superintendent of Police Yogesh Goyal said that additional policemen have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order. 


Following the attack on the boy, the Hindu organisation shut down shops at Hathipol, Chetak Circle, Bapu Bazaar, Ghantaghar, and Ashwini Bazaar.


Several people also reached the MB Hospital in Udaipur, where the minor boy is being treated, to protest against the incident. As a result, police personnel were also deployed at the hospital.


Hindus in the area have been demanding the arrest of the accused minor and that he be given severe punishment as soon as possible.


Police said that entire matter will be investigated thoroughly. As of now, there is no concerete information about what happened between the two students earlier. 


It is being said that the two of them had a quarrel outside school that turned violent, causing the accused minor to stab the other student.


The condition of the injured student is said to be stable at present.
