The ongoing controversy surrounding the alleged adulteration of the Tirumala Laddu prasadam has now embroiled the film industry, with a public spat between actor Karthi and Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan. The issue flared up after Tamil actor Karthi, attending a film event in Hyderabad, made a light-hearted remark in response to a meme referencing the laddu controversy.
On Monday, Karthi when asked about laddu said that they should not talk about laddu now as it was a sensitive topic. Further he said, "We don't want."
However, his comment was seen by some as dismissive of the seriousness of the ongoing debate around the sacred offering.
So, the comment did not sit well with Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan, who reacted strongly, warning Karthi and others in the film industry against making light of the matter. The Deputy CM said that the people from the film industry can talk about the issue in support of it and if not should refrain from it. "Don't you ever dare," he added, sending a clear message that such comments would not be tolerated.
In response to Kalyan’s sharp remarks, Karthi took to X (formerly Twitter) to clarify his stance and issued an apology. "Dear @PawanKalyan sir, with deep respect to you, I apologize for any unintended misunderstanding caused. As a humble devotee of Lord Venkateswara, I always hold our traditions dear. Best regards," Karthi wrote, seeking to smooth over any perceived slight.
Earlier, veteran actor Prakash Raj also waded into the debate criticising Kalyan for what he perceived as politicising the laddu issue. In a strong rebuttal, Kalyan responded by defending his stance, stating that his comments were focused on the sanctity of Hinduism and food adulteration.
