Udayagiri Tension: The Udayagiri area in Mysuru witnessed tension on Monday night after a derogatory social media post involving Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. An angry crowd gathered at the Udayagiri police station demanding the arrest of the accused.


The post had morphed images of Gandhi, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav.


As per an India Today report, the crowd started pelting stones at police vehicles. Additional police forces were deployed to maintain law and order and police resorted to lathi charge and tear gas to disperse the crowd. Seven police personnel were injured in the incident.

Assistant Director General of Police R Hitendra said, "A group instigated violence after a derogatory statement was uploaded on social media. The police registered a suo motu case and arrested the accused. Despite this, the group demanded that he be handed over to them, believing that he might get bail and escape punishment easily."


"The police used force to disperse the crowd. During this, some individuals pelted stones, damaging a few vehicles. Some people also suffered injuries, but there are no in-patient cases," he added.


Home Minister G Parameshwara said around 200 people came to the police station and created chaos. “They wanted the accused to be handed over to them and then threw stones at the station. The police took the situation under control. Many have been arrested and even the accused of the post is arrested. Action will be taken against whoever participated in the attack,” he said.


He said the police will do their job. "I have sent my ADGP Law and Order and he's looking into it,"  Parameshwara added.
