The accused arrested in the attack on actor Saif Ali Khan is suspected to be an illegal Bangaldeshi immigrant, said police on Sunday. The accused entered the actor's house with the intention of theft, they added.
Addressing a press conference on Sunday, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone-IX, Dikshit Gedam said the arrested accused has been identified as Mohammed Shariful Islam Shehzad, aged 30 years and is suspected to be an illegal immigrant from Bangladesh.
Gedam said no previous record of the accused has been found. The accused "doesn't have valid Indian documents" and "seizures indicate him to be a Bangladeshi," the DCP said, adding relevant sections of Passport Act have been added to the case.
The accused came to Mumbai four to five months earlier and lived at various locations around the city's vicinity. Gedam also said the accused was woring with a housekeeping agency.
During interrogation, the arrested accused said he did not know the house he entered belonged to actor Saif Ali Khan.

With the Bangladeshi immigrant angle, the case is now being monitored by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) and the officials from the federal agencies can interrogate the accused, according to ABP News sources.
The accused was arrested in the early hours of Sunday from Thane's Hiranandani Estate. He has been kept at Khar Police Station and will be produced in Holiday court where police will seek his custody.
