The West Bengal government on Wednesday sacked Dr Surhita Paul from the post of principal at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata amid the ongoing protests.

The government also removed the HOD of the Chest Department and one Assistant Superintendent as students continued protests against the rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at the hospital.

Earlier today, senior doctors, nurses and medics from across medical colleges of the state conducted a march to the state health department headquarters and laid siege to the premises till representatives of protestors met the department’s top officials and submitted a memorandum this afternoon.

“Our newly-appointed principal Dr Surhita Pal has gone missing. She is supposed to be our guardian but she has not turned up at the campus since the night the hospital was vandalised. We have heard that she is operating out of Shwasthya Bhavan. So we are headed there to find her out,” a junior doctor said.

The protesting doctors demanded that people on all administrative posts like Medical Superintendent Cum Vice Principal (MSVP) and Principal of the hospital be changed.

The Health Department also removed former principal Sandip Ghosh’s appointment as the principal of Calcutta National Medical College.

The trouble continued to mount for Sandip Ghosh as he was appointed as the principal of the National Medical College immediately after his resignation.

Though no fresh arrests were reported in the case, the CBI continued with its questioning of top officials of the RG Kar Hospital. The probe agency grilled Sandip Ghosh for the sixth consecutive day on Wednesday.
