Mild tensions erupted in Secunderabad on Monday after an idol was found damaged at a temple and a large number of people gathered around the premises demanding stern action against the perpetrators.

One person was taken into custody in connection with the alleged vandalisation of the idol at the Muthyalamma temple, said a senior police official adding that further investigation into the matter was underway, reported PTI.

A Muthyalamma temple idol in Kurmaguda near a passport office in Hyderabad was allegedly vandalised and locals caught one individual and handed them over to police under Market police station limits, said Assistant Commissioner of Police Mahankali division.

The protest was joined by several leaders and workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party. The party's senior leader Madhavi Latha was also participating in the protest and was detained along with other workers.

"They are taking me to the jail for protesting over the vandalisation of Mata's idol. We are ready for this," Latha told reporters.

Union Minister and Telangana BJP chief G Kishan Reddy visited the temple and demanded a thorough probe into the matter.

"I demand a thorough inquiry into it and punish those who damaged the idol. It is the state government's responsibility to provide security to Hindu temples," the Union Minister said.

A large number of police personnel were deployed near the temple premises.
