A woman was allegedly gang-raped on knifepoint by robbers in Odisha's Bhubaneshwar earlier this week. The incident reportedly happened early on Monday, when the burglars broke into the woman's flat, and looted her ornaments before sexually assaulting her.
The woman lodged a complaint with Bhubaneshwar police on Tuesday in which she claimed the two burglars took turns raping her. Police have detained two persons in connection with the incident, and an investigation is ongoing, according to news agency PTI.
As per police, the attack took place around 2 am on Monday in the city’s Maitri Vihar area, where the woman was asleep at her house with her two-year-old daughter. There was no male member present in the flat when the incident reportedly took place.
The woman, who works for a private company, had moved into the flat only 10 days ago, police said.
As per the woman's complaint, she and her child were asleep when robbers broke open their door on the first floor and gagged her. "One of them held my child at knifepoint and robbed our belongings,” she wrote in her complaint.
While leaving her rented home, the robbers sexually assaulted the woman, the complainant stated. They allegedly gang-raped the woman by threatening that they would kill her daughter if she shouted for help.
The woman also claimed that the accused were speaking in Hindi, according to a report by Times of India. Due to the lack of CCTV cameras in the apartment, authorities are seeking clues from nearby surveillance footage.
In an unrelated case, a POCSO court in Odisha's Sambalpur sentenced a man to death for raping and murdering an 8-year-old girl in 2022. The court ordered the victim to be hanged till death and also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh.
