A day after violence erupted at Udayagiri police station in Mysuru, authorities have taken five individuals into custody for their involvement in the attack. The incident, which occurred late Monday, left seven policemen injured as a mob gathered to demand the handover of a man accused of posting derogatory content on social media.
According to police, tensions flared after the accused, who allegedly posted provocative content, was held at the Udayagiri police station. A large crowd assembled outside, insisting that he be handed over to them. When the police refused, the situation escalated, with the mob damaging vehicles and attempting to storm the premises, as per a report on PTI.
To control the unrest, police resorted to baton charges and fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. Senior officers, including Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) R Hitendra and Mysuru Police Commissioner Seema Latkar, arrived at the scene to restore order.
Addressing the situation, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Wednesday assured strict action against those responsible. Parameshwara told ANI, "All those people who took the law into their hands have been identified using CCTV footage. 5-6 people have been taken into custody. In an incident like this, we don't spare anybody..."
Taking to X, Karnataka BJP said, "Mysuru’s Udayagiri police station under attack by an mob! Police vehicles torched, cops assaulted, and even the DCP’s vehicle attacked. If the police aren’t safe, what about common Kannadigas? Congress has surrendered Karnataka to rioters!"
