At least one woman died and three others were injured as a portion of a building collapsed near Grant Road West Railway Station in Maharashtra's Mumbai on Saturday. Several people are reportedly stuck in the building and efforts are on to rescue them. According to the fire brigade officials, 13 people have been rescued sor far.
Parts of the second and third floors of the four-storey Rubinisa Manzil building along with a balcony came crashing down at around 10.55 am morning.
Around 35-40 people were in the residential building at the time of the collapse. Rescuers are looking for survivors stuck under the debris of the collapsed structure.
Several videos from the accident site showed some other parts of the structure hanging precariously. Fire engines, ambulances along with police officials are present at the site.
This was the first major structure collapse incident reported in Mumbai this monsoon season as heavy rain continued to batter the city and its surrounding areas over the last three days.
Heavy Rains In Mumbai
Mumbai and its suburbs received intermittent heavy spells of rain on Saturday, which led to waterlogging in some areas affecting day-to-day life. Due to waterlogging, traffic on the road near Sheetal Cinema and Kale Marg, both in Kurla area, was diverted.
Similarly, traffic on the Aarey route in Goregaon East has been diverted via Seepz-Marol Maroshi-JVLR in both directions, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials said.
Andheri subway has also been temporarily shut for vehicles due to waterlogging and traffic has been diverted to S V Road, a traffic police official said.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in the city today.
