The Vanrai police in the Mumbai district of Maharashtra have charged two individuals along with a member of the management of the NESCO Exhibition Centre Goregaon (East), for allegedly preventing animal feeders from feeding stray dogs in the NESCO area. As a result, it has led to the starvation deaths of 26 canines.

The FIR was filed on Friday night against an NESCO management member named Meena and security guard Maurya after a complaint by Mehek Sharma, a 29-year-old animal lover from Goregaon (West).

Accuse Forbid Animal Lover To Feed and Treat Dogs

According to a report of India Express, for the past year, Sharma and her husband have been feeding 30 to 40 stray dogs at the Goregaon NESCO ground area. However, over the last 3 to 4 months, the two accused have forbidden Sharma from feeding the dogs, leading to the deaths of 20 dogs. “When we tried to give treatment to these ill dogs, we were not allowed to take ambulances inside,” sharma reported to police.

When Sharma and others attempted to meet with NESCO management representatives, the accused again prevented them from feeding the dogs. The representatives assured that they would discuss the issue with management.

“The two accused persons did not allow me and my associates to feed dogs in the NESCO area and subjected the animals to cruelty, thus causing the deaths of 26 dogs in the NESCO area,” Sharma claimed in the FIR.

A police officer, requesting anonymity, mentioned that 9 of the 26 dogs died in the past five days. The accused have been booked under sections 325 (mischief by killing or maiming animals) and 351 (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, and section 11(1)(i) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

Sources indicated that the police are likely to summon NESCO management members for questioning on Monday. When contacted, the accused refused to comment and share the contacts of the people concerned from the NESCO management.
