A Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader, belonging to the Ajit Pawar faction, was hacked to death in Mumbai's Byculla area on Saturday night (October 5). The victim, identified as Sachin Kurmi, held the position of taluka president in the party.


As per police, he was attacked by unidentified persons with a sharp weapon behind the MHADA colony in the Byculla area of the city around 12:30 am. Soon after the police got information about the incident, cops reached the spot and found Kurmi in an injured state. They took him to the nearby JJ Hospital, where the doctors declared him dead, the news agency reported quoting the police. 


The police then took the victim's body into their custody and sent it for a post-mortem. They have also registered a case into the incident and further probe is underway. "NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) leader Sachin Kurmi was murdered by unidentified persons with a sharp-edged weapon in Mumbai's Byculla area last night. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway," Mumbai police said.


It's not clear who was behind the attack on Kurmi, but the cops suspect two to three people could be involved in the incident. The police have registered a case against unknown people and started an investigation. 


The incident was reported around midnight last night when Sachin left his house for a night walk. During the probe, police scanned CCTV footage of the area and found that three people, riding an Active two-wheeler, chased the NCP leader and stabbed him, sources told ABP. 


As per sources, the deceased was stabbed more than once with a sharp weapon.


Police have formed eight teams to investigate the case. Apart from this, two to three teams of Crime Branch have been formed which are searching for the accused involved in the case.


Further details regarding the case are awaited, however, the incident has raised concerns about security in the region.
