Ganpati Visarjan: At least 40 people, including women and children, were injured on Wednesday evening after the roof of a building collapsed during a Ganesh Visarjan procession in Maharashtra’s Bhandara district. Municipal Corporation has initiated a probe to ascertain if the building was illegal.
The incident occurred when a large crowd had gathered to see the visarjan procession at Ambedkar Chowk. A group of people was also standing on the roof of a building to watch the procession. A video of the incident has surfaced on social media.
In the video, women can be seen dancing in traditional costumes during the procession when suddenly the roof came tumbling down, unable to bear the weight of the people.
Since several ambulances were present at the spot due to the procession, the injured were rushed to a primary health centre immediately. Those who sustained serious injuries were admitted to a government hospital in Lakhandur. “The condition of the mildly injured is out of danger,” the report quoted a medical officer Chanrasuresh Dongarwar as saying.
In another incident which took place during a Ganesh idol immersion procession in Maharashtra’s Sambhajinagar, a 37-year-old died on Tuesday, September 17, after collapsing. A police official stated that the incident took place in the evening during the procession at Jintur town.
The man, identified as Sandip Kadam of Bordi, collapsed while dancing to DJ music. He was rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead. The cause of death is yet unknown. Police are waiting for the post-mortem report to ascertain the cause of his death, PTI reported.
On Wednesday, a clash broke out between two groups over immersion of their Ganesh idols in Thane district. The incident occurred in the Bhiwandi area, where stones were pelted after the two groups engaged in a clash over wanting to immerse their Ganesh idols first. Police have detained some individuals and cases are being registered. A few policemen and participants were injured in the clash.
