Maha Kumbh Stampede Highlights: 30 Devotees Killed, 60 Injured; CM Yogi Announces Judicial Probe

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath has ordered a judicial inquiry to find the reasons that led to the stampede at the Maha Kumbh, killing 30 people and leaving 60 injured. He also announced an ex gratia of Rs 25 lakh each for the kin of the deceased.
More than 6.99 crore devotees have taken a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam today on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya. Over 19.94 crore people have performed snan as of January 28.
Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences over the Maha Kumbh stampede and said, "The incident is heart-wrenching. We express our deepest condolences to all those families who lost their loved ones. We have been in constant touch with the administration since last night. The Mela Authority, Police, Administration, NDRF, SDRF and all other arrangements that could be made have been deployed there."
Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate alleged that "mismanagement due to VIP culture" is the reason for the stampede at Maha Kumbh that killed at least 30 people.
"Mismanagement due to VIP culture is the reason why the stampede took place. This VIP culture at Maha Kumbh must end. People go there to offer prayers, but this VIP culture creates problems for the common man," she alleged.
A total of 30 people have lost their lives in the tragic Maha Kumbh stampede, with 25 victims identified so far. As many as 60 devotees have sustained injuries in the incident.
On Maha Kumbh stampede incident in Prayagraj today, RJD MP Manoj Jha said: "It would be wrong to call these stampede deaths. Why does stampede occur? These deaths were caused by mismanagement. Those who died were common people. I can see hierarchy in the matter of faith as well... There were a lot of advertisements, only if 20 per cent of it would have been contributed for crowd management and the same arrangements were made for common people as there were for VVIPs, then it wouldn't have happened."
Harigiri Maharaj from Juna Akhada, before taking Amrit Snan at Sangam, said: “We held a meeting with other Akhadas and decided that the Snan would begin only after Rahu Kaal ends. Rahu Kaal lasted until 2 PM, and after that, each Akhada has a designated time for taking the holy dip.”

On Mauni Amawasya, Jagadguru Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati Maharaj says, "All the three Shankaracharyas of the country are going to take a holy dip here today. The incident that took place late last night is unfortunate and everyone is sad but we should be cautious that no such incident happens in the future. I appeal to the devotees to remain patient and take a holy dip anywhere in the Kumbh Kshetra. There is no specific place where devotees should gather to take the dip..."

On stampede at Maha Kumbh, PM Narendra Modi said, "The accident that happened in Prayagraj Mahakumbh is extremely sad. My deepest condolences to the devotees who have lost their loved ones in this. Along with this, I wish for the speedy recovery of all the injured. The local administration is engaged in helping the victims in every possible way. In this regard, I have spoken to Chief Minister Yogi ji and I am constantly in touch with the state government."
President Droupadi Murmu tweeted, "The stampede at Prayagraj Maha Kumbh is extremely sad. I express my condolences to the families of the injured devotees and pray to God that all the injured devotees recover soon."
All buses, four-wheel vehicles, and pilgrims heading to take a holy dip at the Prayagraj border have been stopped for 24 hours. Additionally, District Magistrate Dinesh Chandra has appealed to everyone not to visit the Kumbh for the next 24 hours due to the heavy crowd.
Lok Sabha LoP and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi tweeted, "The news of several people being killed and many being injured due to stampede at Prayagraj Mahakumbh is extremely sad. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and hope for the speedy recovery of the injured. Mismanagement and the administration's special focus on VIP movement instead of common devotees are responsible for this tragic incident... I request Congress workers and leaders to help the affected families."
In a conversation with ABP News, Akhara Parishad President Mahant Ravindra Puri said that the situation has now become normal. He added that the Akhara is preparing to leave for Amrit Snan from 11:00 AM.
In the backdrop of the stampede-like situation at Maha Kumbh, Congress party president Mallikarjun Kharge said, "Half-hearted arrangements, VIP movement, paying more attention to self-promotion than management, and mismanagement are responsible for this."
He said that the central and state governments should improve the system so that such unpleasant incidents do not happen in the future.
Congress Leader Pawan Khera, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), questioned the UP government over the 'incomplete arrangements' at the Maha Kumbh. He said that additional security forces should be sent to manage the crowd at the Kumbh Mela.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), former Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal prayed for the departed souls, who lost their lives in the stampede-like situation during the Maha Kumbh. He has also appealed to all devotees to maintain patience and be cautious. He has further asked them to follow the instructions of the administration and take care of each other's safety.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is continuously monitoring the situation in Kumbh and is constant contact with the state government. He has spoken with the UP CM Yogi Adityanath for the third time till now and is giving directions for normalisation of situation and relief.
An ambulance has reportedly caught fire in the Maha Kumbh area. As per the visuals, people were seen using fire extinguishers to douse the flames. More details are awaited.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has appealed to the devotees to take a dip at their nearest ghat and not try to go towards Sangam Nose. He also asked devotees to follow the instructions of the administration and cooperate with them. He added that people should not pay attention to any rumours.
Former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar Tejashwi Yadav took to X (formerly Twitter) and expressed condolences over the Maha Kumbh incident. He also prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured devotees.
Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avdheshanand Giri Maharaj of Juna Akhara said, "Today's 'snan' was for the welfare of the world. I express my condolence for the accident which has occurred. I hope the families of the injured persons find strength. Due to this, we have postponed our 'Shobha yatra' today."
Niranjani Akhara Chief Kailashanand Giri Maharaj said, "Seeing the large and indispensable crowds, Akhara Parishad and all the acharyas have decided that we will not do 'snaan' today."
He added that all the Akharas have agreed to and refrained from taking a holy dip today and will take the dip on Vasant Panchmi.

Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti said, as quoted by news agency ANI, "This is a sad incident. Whatever happened was not right. Akhara Parishad has decided to cancel their Amrit Snan keeping in mind the public interest". She appealed to the people that the entire Mela Kshetra is Kumbh, hence they may take a bath at any ghat and not just the Triveni Ghat.
