Imagine, a government servant has taken the oath of allegiance to the Constitution of India to perform his/her duty. However, when an aggrieving citizen reached him/her to ask for help, that officer turned hostile and did not perform his/her duty as mandated.
In a shocking development, a senior cop from Karnataka has been arrested and suspended after a video of him, which allegedly showed him molesting a woman went viral on the social media, police said on January 3.
The accused has been identified as Ramachandrappa. He was posted as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) in Madhugiri (Tumakuru district). The 58-year-old officer, on the pretext of helping a woman to solve her land dispute and and provide her justice, lured her to satisfy his lust.
The NDTV has reported that the alleged incident happened on Thursday. According to police, the woman visited DySP Ramachandrappa's office in Tumakuru to complain about a land dispute. The woman from Pavagada has alleged that the accused officer took her to a room and misbehaved with her, touching her inappropriately.
The the entire incident was recorded by a person from outside the window on camera and has since been circulating on social media platforms.
Terming the alleged incident as a serious matter, a senior police officer said the police department will not tolerate harassment or violence against women.
He said "We have registered a case under sections 68 (sexual intercourse by a person in authority), 75 (sexual harassment), and 78 (stalking) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and have arrested the DySP. He has also been suspended from service," he added.
As per the details, the case is being investigated by an officer of the rank of Additional Superintendent of Police, the senior cop added.
The incident which took place in Karnataka's Home Minister Dr Parameshwar's home district has drawn sharp criticism from the public, and many of them have called for strict action against the accused cop.
