In a crackdown on tax evasion, the Bengaluru transport department seized 30 luxury cars on Sunday for operating without paying the mandatory road taxes, officials confirmed to PTI on Monday. The seized vehicles include high-end brands such as Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Austin, and Range Rover.
The operation was carried out by a team of 41 officials, led by Transport Deputy Commissioner C Mallikarjun, with support from Regional Transport Officers B Srinivas Prasad, Deepak, Srinivasappa, and Ranjit.
These vehicles were found to be plying on Bengaluru's roads without the required taxes being paid. The authorities have issued notices to recover approximately Rs 3 crore in unpaid taxes from the owners of the seized vehicles.

Meanwhile, Karnataka has some of the highest road tax rates in India, with the state government determining the tax based on factors such as seating capacity, engine cubic capacity, weight and its purpose of use, as per a report on India Today. Additionally, road tax is also calculated when registering used vehicles or transferring vehicles from other states to Karnataka.
As reported by Asianet News, the operation revealed that several luxury cars, registered in states such as Delhi, Pondicherry, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand, were being operated in Karnataka without meeting the mandatory road tax obligations.
