Delhi Temperature Fluctuates, Likely To Go Down To 10°C By Weekend

Delhi's weather is fluctuating with improved air quality and rising minimum temperatures. IMD has, however, forecast moderate fog and a significant temperature drop by November 30.

Delhi continues to experience fluctuating weather conditions. On Monday, there were indications of a slight improvement in pollution levels, while the minimum temperature has risen by approximately 2°C over the past two days. However, forecasts suggest that temperatures will drop significantly over the next five days.

IMD Forecasts Moderate Fog and Temperature Drop

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate fog in Delhi on Monday, with maximum and minimum temperatures expected to hover around 28°C and 12°C, respectively. By November 30, the minimum temperature is likely to fall to 10°C, accompanied by a drop of about 3°C in the maximum temperature, the IMD has forecast.

Temperature Trend In Delhi

According to the IMD, Sunday’s daytime temperature was recorded at 29.1°C, which is 2°C above normal. The minimum temperature was 12°C, 1°C above the seasonal average. Humidity levels during the day ranged between 76% and 96%.

Air Quality Improves Remains A Concern

The air quality in Delhi improved by a large margin on the morning of Monday, November 24, with the AQI dropping to the 'poor' category. The National Capital recorded an AQI of 279 at 5:30 AM. The AQI at 8 AM on Sunday was 357.

However, the improved AQI still should be a cause for concern for Delhiites as with dropping temperatures, the smog is likely to worsen with barely any wind to push the pollutants out. The IMD said that on November 25 "the predominant surface wind is likely to be from the northwest direction with speed less than 8 kmph during morning hours". 

Moreover, Delhi has previously seen the AQI dropping for a day and then rising again, choking residents. Also, even "poor" category of air is not ideal for breathing nor is it suitable for exercising or even taking walks outdoors. Unless the AQI goes below 100, Delhiites cannot hope to breathe easy.

While GRAP-4 restrictions are in place and the Supreme Court is actively pursuing the case of enforcement of the curbs, Parliament's Winter Session could also see a discussion on Delhi pollution. The Congress has moved an adjournment notice demanding the same.
