A 19-year-old student from Delhi University has accused a cab driver of attempting to assault her during a ride from her rented accommodation near North Campus to ISBT on the night of October 5. The driver was released shortly after he was taken into custody.

A friend of the student said that the driver, identified as Vinod, began asking uncomfortable personal questions amid the journey. The friend explained that the student became suspicious when the driver deviated from the usual route. She asked him to follow the map, but he claimed to know a shortcut. Concerned, the student shared her live location with a friend over the phone.

According to a report by India Express, as the driver continued towards Timarpur and stopped at an isolated area with a blocked road, and began checking around, the student asked him again to turn back and follow the correct route, threatening to call the police.

“The driver threatened the victim by showing a blade and saying, ‘Call the police… it is too easy for me to finish you in two minutes… Do not get out of the vehicle…’” the friend of the victim added.

Female Student Reports To Police

Mustering her courage, the student managed to escape from the vehicle and ran, with the driver chasing her until she reached a nearby residential complex, where a security guard helped her.

Later, the student contacted the Delhi Police helpline to report the incident. However, her friend claimed that the police took time to register the complaint despite the urgent situation.

“And even when the driver was arrested, he got bailed out by the evening. The culprit knows my friend’s address as he picked her up for the ride that night, from her house only… Giving bail to someone in such a situation raises questions on the system,” she said.
