A 22-year-old woman in the Mundka area of outer Delhi slit the throat of her nine-day-old baby because she did not want the child, police reported on Saturday. The incident came to light on Thursday when a man, Govinda, reported to police stating that his wife had slit the throat of their daughter.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Jimmy Chiram stated that a team was dispatched to the couple's residence in Baba Haridas Colony, Tikri of Mundka. Upon arrival, the team discovered the dead infant in a room on the second floor, while the mother was in a different room.
"During sustained interrogation, the woman disclosed that she didn't want to have a girl child that's why she killed her," Chiram said, news agency PTI reported.

The officer also said that they had recovered the knife used in the crime and charged the woman under section 103(1) of BNS. She was arrested and placed in judicial custody. The husband of the woman, who works as a labourer in a shoe factory in Haryana's Bahadurgarh, was also present. The couple also has about two-year-old son, Chiram added, as per PTI.
A similar incident was reported on June 13, 2024, from the Bijnor district of UP where a "mentally unstable" woman was arrested for murdering her four-year-old child. The identified woman, Aadesh Devi, first slit the throat of the baby and then tried to burn the body on a stove inside the house, the police reported.
According to India Today, the incident was discovered when Devi's husband, Kapil Kumar, returned from work where he found his son dead. In a state of shock and devastation, Kumar quickly called family members for assistance.
When family members arrived, the woman armed with a shovel, chased them and her husband away from the house.
