Earlier in the day, Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda said the accused has been identified and picked up from Madhya Pradesh. "He is being brought to Bengaluru on a transit remand," Dayananda was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
To a query about the motive behind the murder, he said, "We don't know it yet. He has to be brought here and then we have to take his police custody and thorough investigation and interrogation has to be conducted... only then further details can shared."
The victim, Kriti Kumari was residing in a paying guest (PG) accommodation in Bengaluru's Koramangala neighbourhood. On Tuesday night, a man, armed with a knife, infiltrated the building where she was living and slit her throat. A CCTV footage of the said incident emerged on Friday purportedly showing gruesome details of the crime.
As per an NDTV report, the accused is the boyfriend of the victim's roommate at the hostel. Quoting sources, the report said that both the accused and his girlfriend used to fight over him being unemployed, and often, when the fights turned ugly, Kumari would intervene to escalate matters.
Kumari allegedly advised her roommate to distance herself from the man, which provoked him to kill her, the report said.
According to police, the assailant sneaked and killed Kumari on July 23 night. The CCTV footage shared by the police showed that the man walked into the corridor of the paying guest holding a polythene bag.
He then knocked on the door and dragged the woman out. The victim resisted the attack but was soon overpowered by the murderer, who slit her throat and ran away.
Hearing the loud noise, other women among the paying guests came running, but they could not save her. A Bihar resident, Kumari was working in a private company in Bengaluru.
