The West Bengal Police on Tuesday arrested a doctor in Hasnabad, North 24 Parganas district, on allegations of raping a female patient after administering a tranquillising serum. The arrest followed a complaint lodged by the victim and her husband, who works in another state.

According to the complaint, the incident took place when the victim visited the doctor for treatment while her husband was away. She alleged that the doctor first tranquillised her and then assaulted her, news agency IANS reported. The doctor allegedly took compromising photographs of her in this state and later used them to blackmail her, threatening to make the images public. Under this coercion, the doctor reportedly raped her on multiple occasions and extorted approximately Rs 4,00,000.

The victim further stated that initially, she was too fearful to disclose the events due to concerns about her social reputation. She also felt isolated, with her husband out of state. However, upon his recent return, she confided in him, and he encouraged her to file a police complaint, IANS reported.

Following the complaint, police detained the accused doctor, who has since been presented in a district court. The public prosecutor has requested a five-day police custody. According to IANS, police sources confirmed that the next steps will involve recording the victim's statement before a judicial magistrate.
