Amid public outrage over the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last month, West Bengal police have reportedly arrested an All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) leader for allegedly raping a young girl at his residence. The accused has been identified as Narayan Mitra, a trade union leader under the Trinamool, officials said on Saturday.

Mitra was arrested on the complaint of the survivor’s family, who alleged that the TMC leader raped the survivor for 2-3 days at his house in Bankur, according to a report by India Today.

After the family's complaint, an FIR was registered against Mitra and he was arrested, the report said quoting officials. The Trinamool Congress has also suspended the leader from their trade union.

Meanwhile, the deadlock between junior doctors and the West Bengal government continued after the delegation of 15 junior doctors went to meet Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday and returned without any solution. According to a video message shared by a junior doctor, they have demanded live-streaming or video recording of the meeting, which was accepted just like Thursday.

On Thursday, a scheduled meeting at Nabanna couldn’t take place after there was a deadlock over the issue of live-streaming.  Doctors are on strike since a postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered while on duty at the R.G. Kar Medical College in Kolkata, West Bengal on August 9. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is probing the case.
