Aligarh Lawyers Protest News: A lathi charge by the police during a hearing at the Ghaziabad district court in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, following an argument between a judge and lawyers, has sparked protests in several districts. The incident has also had a major impact in Aligarh, where lawyers took to the streets to express their outrage. They demanded strong action, including the transfer of the judge and compensation for the lawyers injured in the lathi charge. The Aligarh lawyers are voicing their protest by boycotting Diwali celebrations.
Police personnel on Tuesday had to resort to lathi charge after a group of lawyers allegedly misbehaved with a district judge in the Ghaziabad district court complex in Raj Nagar. It was not immediately clear what led to the altercation at the Sessions Court, but videos doing rounds on social media showed a large number of police personnel and lawyers clashing inside the courtroom. The videos showed lawyers and baton-wielding police personnel coming to blows.
The Aligarh lawyers on Thursday organised a large demonstration outside the district court. They raised slogans, demanding that the administration stop the "injustice and oppression" against lawyers. The lawyers alleged that they were being constantly harassed by the police and the courts.
Demand For Judge's Transfer
The protesting lawyers said that despite their "hard work and honesty", they were not getting "justice". "The lathi charge incident crossed all limits of patience. We are now determined to stand up against this injustice," a protester said. During the demonstration, the lawyers held placards with slogans like "Transfer Judge", "Oppose Police Lathi Charge", and "Justice For Lawyers" written on them. They made it clear that they were not going to compromise on the matter.
The lawyers also said that the police's attitude towards them was extremely negative. They said that it was the government's responsibility to ensure the safety of lawyers. "We shall not back down unless the police cease their barbarity. For us, this issue is not just about the lathi charge, but also about rights and dignity.
'No Festive Celebration Till Demands Are Met': Lawyers
Senior advocate Rakshpal Singh Raghav said that the lawyers of Aligarh made it clear during their demonstration that they have no intention of celebrating Diwali. He said that they will not celebrate any festival until their demands are met.
