The stock markets this week will have a shorter trading week on account of the festival of Dussehra. Also called Vijayadashmi, this is one of the most popular Hindu festivals celebrated in the country. Every year, the stock market observes a holiday to mark the festival of Dussehra.

This year, stock markets will take a break from trading on Tuesday, i.e., October 24, 2023, on the occasion of Dussehra. Both the National Stock Exchange and the Bombay Stock Exchange will remain closed for the celebration of Dussehra. The festival of Dussehra celebrates the victory of good over evil.

After observing a holiday on Gandhi Jayanti earlier this month, this will mark the second festive holiday for the markets this month. The multi-commodity exchange will also be closed on Tuesday for both morning and evening sessions. In 2023, the total number of holidays in the stock market is 15, two more than in 2022.

Apart from the Tuesday holiday, the stock market is gearing up for a busy week ahead as companies report their earnings for the second quarter of the fiscal year. In the last two weeks, major companies like HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Wipro, Infosys, HCL Tech, and many others reported their financial results for the quarter ended September. This week’s earnings lineup is full of giants like Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), Axis Bank, PNB, Tech Mahindra, and others.

As the festive season continues in full swing, there are some more holidays ahead where investors will not be able to trade in the stock market. In the month of November, the stock markets will be closed for trading on November 14 to celebrate the festival of Diwali-Balipratipada, and then again on November 27 for the celebration of Guru Nanak Jayanti. Investors would have gotten another stock market holiday for Diwali, had the festival fallen on trading days. However, the festival of Diwali this year falls on a Sunday, i.e., on November 12. At the same time, it is a market tradition to announce a special trading Muhurat for Diwali every year, where the stock market is opened for an hour of trading.

Another upcoming holiday for the stock market will fall on December 25, on the occasion of Christmas, where markets will observe a holiday to celebrate the festival.
