NXP Semiconductors plans to increase its workforce in India to over 6,000 within the next five years, said Kurt Sievers, the company's CEO. In addition to this expansion, NXP will invest $1 billion over the same period to enhance its research and development capabilities in India, focusing on both hardware and software. 


This investment aims to advance key projects, including a recently launched 5-nanometer chip for the automotive sector. Sievers highlighted that the majority of the new hires will be design engineers, who currently make up over 80 per cent of the company's Indian workforce. He shared these details during an interview with The Economic Times at the Semicon India conference in Greater Noida.


"The most innovative products we design worldwide are co-designed in India at our Noida and Bangalore offices. So, it is not like India is doing legacy work for us. It is already at the forefront of the technology," he said.


Sievers noted that India has made significant strides in raw talent availability by incorporating semiconductor training into college curricula. This advancement facilitates valuable collaborations between companies like NXP Semiconductors and educational institutions.


"My big relief is that if we get college graduates straight away, that's the best we can do because then we embrace them early in the career and can raise them. We are committed to doing this," Sievers stated. He also mentioned that the company plans to increase its recruitment of women in the future. 


He added that looking ahead, NXP intends to expand its offerings in India to encompass complete system solutions rather than focusing on individual products or services and will work directly with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). "In the western part of the world, we often work with a tier-one company, which is between us and the OEM customer. In India, they are more modern, and the OEMs directly work with us through vertical integration," Sievers remarked.
