Tata Group, known for it’s philanthropic legacy and diverse ventures, is planning to pass the baton to the next generation. Amongst those being potentially considered, Maya Tata is the latest name to take over the almost 150-year-old company, established in the 1860s.

Born to Noel Tata and Aloo Mistry, Maya Tata is currently a board member of the Tata Medical Centre Trust. Maya, and her siblings Leah and Neville, are being groomed by the iconic Ratan Tata himself, to take the Tata empire forward.

Lineage

Noel Tata is the half-brother of Ratan Tata and Aloo Mistry is the daughter of late billionaire Pallonji Mistry. Former Tata Group Chairman Cryus Mistry, who passed away in a car accident last year, is Maya Tata’s maternal uncle.

Maya’s mother Noel Tata is the daughter of Naval Tata and Simone Tata, who is the step-mother of Ratan Tata. Simone Tata played a major role in establishing Lakme in the country and making it a household brand. The matriarch is also responsible for building Tata’s Westside brand, an immensely popular shopping brand today.

Education and Formal Training

Maya Tata pursued her education at the Bayes Business School and the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom. The step-niece of Ratan Tata began her journey in the business world by joining the Tata Opportunities Fund, a subsidiary of Tata Capital. Maya used this experience to train and develop her skills in portfolio management and investor relations and in turn, strengthen her understanding of the workings of the corporate world.

After the closure of the Tata Opportunities Fund, Maya shifted to Tata Digital, to understand the functioning of the digital world. While working at Tata Digital, Maya also witnessed the launch of the Tata Neu App, a platform to provide users a personalised and immersive shopping experience. This experience helped develop further her preference for innovative and modern technologies going forward.
