L&T Bags Order For Part Construction Of 2 Fleet Support Ships From Hindustan Shipyard Ltd

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) on Tuesday announced that the company’s entity secured an order from the Indian Navy. The company issued an official release and informed that Precision Engineering Systems, a business vertical of the firm, bagged an order for part construction of Two Fleet Support Ships (FSS) from Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL).

The company informed that the Indian Navy will be the end user of the vessels. Earlier in August 2023, the Indian Navy entered into an agreement with HSL and allocated the design and construction responsibility of 5 FSS to the latter for the use of the Navy.

Notably, FSS are specialised naval vessels that are used to provide logistics and material support to the naval task force at sea. These are among the largest vessels in the Indian Naval Fleet with over 220 meter in length and a displacement of approximately 45,000 tonne.

“In Line with GoI’s vision of “Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, these first-of-its kind vessels to be built in domestic Yards, will be concurrently constructed by both the shipyards to meet the challenging delivery times. This collaborative approach in shipbuilding will serve as a cornerstone for achieving strategic national objectives of rapidly enhancing the Indian Naval Fleet while driving economic activity and technological advancement in India’s maritime domain,” the company said. 

The company informed that it will construct the two support ships at its greenfield shipyard at Kattupalli, near Chennai. Further, the conglomerate noted that it has in-house designed, constructed, and delivered more than 70 defence vessels since commissioning its first order in March 2010.
