Indore, Madhya Pradesh became the cleanest city in India for the seventh consecutive time in January this year at the Swachh Survekshan Awards. This feat of the city was pointed out by Mahindra Group Chairman, Anand Mahindra, on social media platform X.
The businessman in his post shared a video of US travel vlogger, Max McFarlin, where he highlighted how clean the roadside eateries are in Indore. The vlogger observed that the eateries were placing used steel plates in separate bins and also provided the customers with an individual basin available for handwashing.
Mahindra in his post shared optimism about observing the same level of cleanliness across the country some day. “Cannot help dreaming: If this were to be replicated throughout the country…,” the post read.
In the video, McFarlin expressed his amazement at the local people’s dedication to maintaining the cleanliness in their locality. He pointed out how people also ensure that they clean up after themselves if they spill accidentally on the street.
The video went viral and received a lot of positive response from Netizens. Lauding the city's efforts, one user wrote, "This is why Indore is the cleanest city in India! Role model city for Swatch Bharat Abhiyaan! Indore processes over 1,900 tons of urban waste every day. This helps the city fuel its buses and gives it crores of rupees. Usually, the garbage is segregated into dry and wet categories. However, Indore takes a step ahead in segregating the garbage into 6 distinct categories at a collection point."
Notably, the cleanest city award was awarded to Indore and Surat, while Maharashtra became the leading state in cleanliness, the awards in January 2024 revealed. Both cities clocked a door-to-door collection of waste at 100 per cent and scored 98 per cent in segregation at source. As per a report by PTI, Indore invested Rs 200 crore annually in waste management.
