This wave of layoffs continues to spread across companies in different sectors, causing significant turbulence in the job market as numerous companies implement job cuts throughout the year. The most recent company to announce layoffs is General Motors.
The well-known automotive manufacturer recently laid off over 1,000 employees. This reduction included approximately 600 positions at its tech campus near Detroit as part of a broader effort to streamline operations and improve efficiency. In a statement to CNBC, the company said, "As we build GM's future, we must simplify for speed and excellence, make bold choices, and prioritise the investments that will have the greatest impact."
An employee shared his experience on LinkedIn, expressing his shock and disappointment with how the situation was managed. Upon arriving at work, he discovered that his badge had been deactivated, his access to company systems had been revoked, and GM security had instructed him to leave the premises. He expressed regret that he could not say farewell to his colleagues or express his appreciation for the memories they had shared.
"Today I found out, along with countless others, that I was laid off from GM. I arrived at work this morning to find my badge deactivated, my access to Teams and Outlook revoked, and direction from GM Security to leave the property. I was unable to tell my coworkers goodbye, thank them for the many memories we had... I couldn't do anything but stand there in shock," he wrote in his post.
He further added that the firm sent an email at 5 am, which he could not see. “The only warning we had was an email sent out at 5 AM this morning, that I didn't even see,” he wrote.
“This email stated that "We (Software and Services) are critical to GM’s bold vision for the future—as we build that future, we must also make bold choices that enable us to move faster, pivot when needed, and prioritize investing in what will have the greatest impact." There is a difference between being bold and being ruthless and cutthroat. That difference is empathy and compassion. Empathy and compassion for the people that enable GM to be as successful as it is,” the post reads.
“At the end of the day, GM proves that they have none. We are nothing but numbers to them, fat to be trimmed off in the pursuit of the almighty dollar. Even though they recently celebrated a $4.6B profit in Q2 2024... that was not enough for them. We were not even given the common decency to say goodbye, just thrown onto the curb like useless trash,” he added in his post.
He concluded his post with: “I'm looking forward to finding new opportunities for my career going forward. I WILL come back from this, more driven than ever before in my pursuit to have a successful career and hopefully help create a world where empathy and compassion drives our decisions, and not the allure of a dollar bill.”
