New Delhi: The world's richest man Elon Musk has been talk of the town ever since he caught the elusive Twitter bird for $44 billion, an agreement that will make the micro-blogging platform an entity wholly owned by Musk.

Even as the deal has drawn a mixed response from nitizens with some hailing it as a win for free speech, while other raising concerns, a Twitter conversation between Musk and a social media user has gone viral.

A Twitter user Dave Smith had suggested Musk to buy Twitter back in 2017, in response to the billionaire's tweet that read: "I love Twitter".

Responding to Smith's proposal, Musk asked: "How much is it?"

Sharing a screenshot of the conversation with the Tesla and SpaceX CEO, Dave Smith wrote: "This exchange continues to haunt me".

Twitter announced late on Monday that it has entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by an entity wholly owned by Musk for $54.20 per share in cash in a transaction valued at nearly $44 billion.

Before the official announcement, Musk promised to promote free speech on Twitter and said that he hopes that his worst critics should remain on the micro-blogging platform.

"I hope that even my worst critics remain on Twitter because that is what free speech means," he tweeted.
