The chief architect of Economic Survey, the flagship document of the finance ministry, will be prepared by Subramanian and his team.

It's a critical document from the government giving an insight into the country’s economic condition. The Economic Survey comprises a detailed report on the state of the economy in the past one year listing the key challenges expected and the way out. The document is prepared by the Economic Division of the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) under the guidance of the CEA.  After the document is prepared, the Survey gets approved by the Finance Minister.

KV Subramanian took the position of CEA in December 2018, for a tenure of three years. He took over the position after Arvind Subramanian vacated the post early due to “personal reasons.”

In his official Twitter account, Subramanian has mentioned that he enjoyed deep thinking and research. He also specified that he tweets more as a thinker than as an economist.

He also worked under former RBI governor, Raghuram Rajan. An IIT-IIM alumnus, Subramanian is among one of the world’s leading experts in banking, corporate governance and economic policy.

The economist has also served on several expert committees including the PJ Nayak Committee on governance of banks for the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Uday Kotak Corporate Governance Committee of Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).

His prior work experience includes a consultant role with JPMorgan Chase in New York. He also served in a management role in the elite derivatives research group at ICICI Ltd.

On the educational front, Subramanian's holds a PhD (Financial Economics) from the Booth School of Business, University of Chicago (2005); and MBA (Top ranker in the Batch, Placed in the Institute’s Roll of Honor) (Finance) from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Calcutta (1999); and a B. Tech (Electrical Engineering) degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur (1994).

He authored the path-breaking Economic Survey that commends “Ethical Wealth Creation” for a prosperous India.

The slew of reforms implemented in the Covid economic package draw on key reform ideas advocated by him in the Economic Surveys of 2019 and 2020.

He has previously been an Assistant Professor of Finance at Emory University in Atlanta, USA. He was also the Founding Board Member at Bandhan Bank (2015-2018).
