New Delhi: Central government has told Delhi High Court e-commerce websites will have to display the country of origin i.e. the manufacturing country with their imported products. According to a PTI report, the affidavit said that according to the Legal Metrology Act and Rules e-commerce sites have to ensure the country of origin is displayed on the “digital and electronic network used for e-commerce transactions. It was submitted before a bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan.

The affidavit was filed by the central government’s standing counsel Ajay Digpaul who stated that the enforcement of these rules is the responsibility of the states and union territories. According to a PTI report, Digpaul said, "whenever any violation is observed, the action is taken by the legal metrology officials of the concerned state or union territory in accordance with law."

This affidavit was filed after a plea by lawyer Amit Shukla which sought implementation of the Legal Metrology Act 2009 and the rules framed under it which mandate that country of origin has to be displayed on products being sold on e-commerce websites.

The report says the petition has claimed that the mandate was not being enforced with respect to e-commerce entities.

Ever since the violent standoff between Chinese and Indian troops at Galwan Valley, Ladakh there have been growing calls for boycotting products from China. India has already banned 59 Chinese Apps including Tik Tok following the incident.
