Budget Session 2022 HIGHLIGHTS:  The Union ministry of external affairs informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday that according to data shared by the Pakistan government, there are 577 Indian fishermen in the custody of India’s neighbouring country.

“As per the lists exchanged on 1 January 2022, Pakistan acknowledged the custody of 577 fishermen who are Indian or are believed to be Indian. As per available information, 9 Indian fishermen died in Pakistani jails in the last five years,” minister of state for external affairs V Muraleedharan said while responding to a question raised by BJP MP Mahesh Poddar.

Meanwhile, the central leadership also informed Rajya Sabha that there is no proposal under its consideration to increase the funds allocated per MP under the MPLAD scheme for now. Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation Rao Inderjit Singh made the announcement through a written reply to a query raised by Left Democratic Front MP Jose K Mani. Replying to Mani's question "whether the government has any plans or proposal to increase the funds allocated per MP under the MPLADS scheme", the Minister said, "There is no proposal under consideration of the government to increase the funds allocated per MP under the MPLAD scheme, at present".

On a discussion over narco-terror nexus, Minister of State for Defence Ajay Bhatt told Rajya Sabha that the security situation along the western borders remains largely stable but there are indications of an emerging narco-terror nexus sponsored by inimical elements across the border aimed at causing instability. The minister also told the House in a written reply that the situation along the Line of Control (LoC) remains stable post the understanding of February 2021 reached between DGMOs (Director General Military Operations) of India and Pakistan. Making a veiled reference to Pakistan in the context of narco-terror nexus, he said India's defence forces along the borders are adequately poised to respond to any challenge.
