The Economic Survey 2023 will be presented on Tuesday, which will typically set the context for the Union Budget to be tabled by FM Nirmala Sitharaman in Parliament on January 31. This will be the first day of the Budget session of the Parliament.

The session will begin at 11:00 on January 31 with President Droupadi Murmu's address to both houses. FM Sitharaman is expected to table the Economic Survey 2023 after that.

After the address, the economic survey will be tabled that will describe the state of the Indian economy in FY2022-23. It will also project the road ahead in terms of GDP growth, inflation, and other key economic indicators. The Economic Survey is prepared by the Department of Economic Affairs under the guidance of the Chief Economic Advisor (CEA). This year the Economic Survey has been developed under the guidance of the CEA V Anantha Nageswaran.

Nageswaran will hold a press conference later to share the broader findings and recommendations documented in the Economic Survey.

What’s Economic Survey?

Known as the flagship publication of the finance ministry, the document is prepared by the Economic Division of the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) under the guidance of the CEA.  After the document is prepared, the Survey has to get approval from the finance minister.

The Economic Survey tracks the state of the economy in the past year. The document showcases the key challenges expected and the way out. The document is divided into several chapters giving detailed information on the prospects of key sectors including the domestic and external state of the Indian economy. The Economic Survey also has a theme every year. Last year, the theme was "agile approach".

The survey released last year by the then Principal Economic Advisor Sanjeev Sanyal moved it from a two-volume format to a single volume. He said the earlier two-volume format was way too “unwieldy.” Last year's the Survey predicted economic growth of 9.2 per cent in real terms in 2021-22, while GDP growth was pegged at 8-8.5 per cent for 2022-23.
