There are almost 15 bank holidays in January 2023. The private and public sector banks will remain shut for a period of 15 days in various cities during the first month of the new year. The holidays in January include the second and fourth Saturdays, as well as Sundays. The banks remain open on the first and third Saturdays of every month.
Some of the bank holidays are state-specific while some are national holidays. The Reserve Bank of India has issued a calendar mentioning the dates on which the banks will not function. The RBI has placed the holidays under three brackets- Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act; Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act and Real-Time Gross Settlement Holiday; and Banks’ Closing of Accounts.
It is imperative to note the days when banks will remain shut to make sure that you don't end up visiting the banks on these days to avoid inconvenience. However, online banking services will continue to function these days.
