Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL), the renewable energy arm of the Adani portfolio companies and the world's largest solar power developer, has been awarded the "Water Positive" certification by DNV, an independent global assurance agency. This signifies that AGEL's water conservation efforts exceed its water consumption, representing a significant milestone in the company's commitment to sustainable water management.
To evaluate AGEL's water balance, DNV conducted both qualitative and quantitative assessments of AGEL's operational sites that have a capacity of over 200 MW in Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh. According to the assessment, AGEL's water balance index was 1.12 (positive), surpassing its target to become Net Water Neutral by FY25 ahead of schedule.
DNV's verification process included sample-based checks, an evaluation of AGEL's methodology, measurement techniques, estimation methods, and assumptions involved in the process of water accounting. Additionally, DNV conducted a desk review of AGEL's water balance details and quantification methodology, along with on-site verification of water credit structures at selected locations.
Water balance is calculated by subtracting water debit from water credit, where water credit refers to the estimated/metered volume of harvested rainwater and groundwater recharge quantities, while water debit denotes the volume of estimated or metered freshwater intake at AGEL's solar and wind operational plants. AGEL uses water for panel cleaning at its solar power plants to optimize the performance of solar panels.
AGEL has significantly reduced its freshwater consumption per unit of generation, achieving a 99.5% reduction compared to the 3.5 KL/MWh statutory limit for thermal power in FY23. The company is dedicated to water stewardship and is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 6.
AGEL primarily uses third-party procured surface water and incorporates robotic module cleaning systems to monitor and minimize freshwater consumption.
