Adani Energy Solutions on Thursday stated it has commissioned the inter-regional 765 KV Warora-Kurnool electricity transmission line. The project will cover 1,756 circuit kilometres (ckm) across Maharashtra, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. The company noted that the project aims to provide a power flow of 4,500 MW between the western and southern regions of the country.

Further, the firm stated that this project intends to strengthen the southern region grid and facilitate large-scale integration of generation from renewable energy sources. Notably, Warora Kurnool Transmission Limited (WKTL) was set up in April 2015, to establish an inter-regional alternate current link for import into the southern region, namely the Warora-Warangal and Chilakaluripeta-Hyderabad-Kurnool regions, in addition to creating a 765/400 kV sub-station in Warangal.

WKTL is allegedly the largest 765 kV tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) project ever distributed under a single scheme. The project included the laying down of a 1,756 ckm transmission line going through Maharashtra, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. The initiative also involved the construction of the 765 kV sub-station in Warangal. Earlier, this project was given to Essel InfraProjects Ltd in 2016 and later on, acquired by AESL in March, 2021, due to the stressed debt restructuring undertaken by the lenders.

The project, involved setting up two mid-stream towers on the Krishna river, posing a challenge as the working window for the project narrowed down to mere three months during the year due to the low water level in this period.

AESL is a part of the Adani group. The firm, a private transmission company, has a presence in more than 14 states in the country and owns a combined transmission network of 20,000 ckm and 53,000 MVA transformation capacity. The transmission company currently caters to more than 12 million consumers in Mumbai and the Mundra Special Economic Zone (SEZ). Recently, the company has been working on developing it’s smart metering business.
