India's New Zealand FTA Is A Big Win, But It's Already Ruffling Kiwi Feathers

India’s fastest-ever FTA promises zero-duty exports to New Zealand, but even as New Delhi celebrates, political unease and farm-sector pushback in Wellington signal that the deal’s real test is only beginning.

In an uneven pitch of vacillating trade talks, tariffs and tantrums, India has stood its ground, batted prudently, run wisely, and clinched the New Zealand FTA in just nine months. Clearly, it won’t be business as usual with New Zealand, which has agreed to eliminate tariffs on 100 per cent of what India exports to it, from entry into force, thus strengthening market access, supporting investment-led growth and creating new opportunities across agriculture, services, education and MSMEs
