The SUVs are ruling the Indian roads and hatchbacks have now been toppled from the best-selling cars position. A few years back, the top best selling cars in India used to be hatchbacks but recently the trend has shifted to SUVs with a clear demand for them.
As a result, the Tata Punch and Hyundai Creta, both pricier than small cars, have taken the first and second spot in the best selling cars title, with the Wagon R being now placed at the third position. An insatiable appetite for SUVs and the changing car buyer taste can be attributed to this and also how value for money is important along with the advantages of an SUV vs a hatchback or sedan.

The Tata Punch sold 17,457 units in March along with the Hyundai Creta selling 16,458 units. The Creta for an SUV which costs Rs 10 lakh plus shows that the buyer is ready to spend more for a bigger SUV with more features along with multiple engine options which is also a key for the success for the Creta.
While hatchbacks such as the Maruti Wagon R, Baleno, Swift continue to hold stronger numbers, the arrival of SUVs is shown with the sales numbers generated by them. Not just the Punch or the Creta though as the Scorpio also sold 15,151 units while the Brezza also sold 14,614 units along with the Nexon nudging 14,058 units.
In the past one year, SUVs have constantly given small cars company in the best selling cars lists but this time, SUVs have outsold hatchbacks for the first and second position! Going forward, SUVs as a genre would expand further to reach different price points along with tapping an even larger audience.
