New Delhi: Tata Motors wants to increase its lead in the EV space and after the success of the Nexon EV, it is now preparing its next wave of new electric cars.
The car-maker has promised 10 EVs within the next 5 years and that includes cars based on a new EV platform along with dedicated new electric cars with no petrol or diesel versions.
Some of the EVs coming soon would be electric versions of cars on sale while future products would be based on a new electric car platform. Since electric cars are different, the platform being adapted for EVs means that they would be spacious and have no compromises in terms of space or having a battery pack.
Typically EVs need to have the right packaging including the heavy battery pack and also to generate more room inside. Hence, these platforms are EV-based and unlike the current Nexon or Tigor, would be having larger battery packs, more space and EV-related features.
Tata Motors is rumoured to showcase a slew of concept cars on the 6th or production-ready versions of its future cars based on its EV strategy. Hence, we should be seeing the new expected long range Tata Nexon along with the EV version of the Tata Altroz too.
However, that is just the starting with new products coming in via an EV-based sportier SUV based on the Nexon and yes, then leading up to the production-ready version of the Tata Sierra concept that we saw at the last Auto Expo. Tata also showcased the Altroz EV at the last Expo but overall, we will get to see more details and maybe, nearer to production concepts of Tata EVs.
While the production version of the Sierra is some time away for launch, the Altroz EV is coming much sooner with an expected launch this year. The race for electric cars is certainly getting hotter with Tata Motors firming up plans plus Mahindra, MG, Hyundai and even Maruti stepping up their EV ambitions. Finally, the Indian EV buyer will have more choices.
