It was at the 1998 Auto Expo that the much awaited Tata Indica was shown and it was the culmination of the dream of Ratan Tata to put Tata Motors on the map in the Indian automotive space. It was his pet project and one that he was involved in right from the design. It was a pivotal moment for Tata Motors and the Indica came at an aggressive price which further sky rocketed demand. It was Ratan Tata's dream to build the perfect Indian family car and it came with space, design and a price which was lower than rivals.

The Indica shaped Tata Motors and can be termed as Ratan Tata's most important project in terms of his legacy. Apart from the Indica, the Nano was another project close to his heart. It was to be an affordable four wheeler and his vision was to move the Indian families on a scooter to a car. Launched with much fanfare in March 2009, the Nano was the '1 lakh' car and while it never became the success that he envisioned, the learnings spurred on to make what Tata Motors is today.

Another bold move was the acquiring British luxury auto brands, Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford Motor Co in 2008 for a net consideration of $2.3 billion. Over the years this move resulted in a successful turnaround for the luxury brand with JLR now being a backbone for Tata. Hence, from products like the Indica to Land Rover, Ratan Tata will leave behind a rich legacy in the Indian automobile industry.
