Toyota has added a 48-volt mild hybrid battery system to its 2.8l diesel engine and its next-gen Fortuner will get a mild hybrid diesel powertrain. The diesel Fortuner will go away and be replaced by a mild hybrid diesel powertrain with a 48v system which would increase fuel efficiency. It is important to note that the current gen Fortuner is based on the IMV platform while the next-generation models would be based on a more flexible platform which underpins the latest global Toyota SUVs.
With auto stop/start and the mild hybrid system, the efficiency will increase by 10 percent.
There would also be a torque boost with the electric motor along with more refinement as well. Along with more refinement even the power and torque would be significantly improved vs. the current Fortuner.
The new Fortuner will sport a design language which is closer to global Toyota SUVs and will gain more luxury too.
The space on offer would be improved and so will the technology on offer along with more features. This would be a mild hybrid and will improve the efficiency along with reducing emissions plus there would be no effect on the off-road ability too. It is not clear whether there would ever be a strong hybrid Fortuner but the move to mild hybrid is one way to keep diesel engines alive as it is quite important for the Fortuner which is still bought majorly with a diesel engine.
The new Fortuner mild hybrid will be launched in 2024 and will be the biggest change for this model in terms of engine technology. The Fortuner is a hugely popular car and a big brand on its own while the new generation like the Innova Hycross is expected to be more expensive while also being more efficient.
