New Delhi: Toyota will launch the new generation Fortuner in India by next year with the global unveil being expected this year. The Fortuner is the most important SUV in the Toyota product range in terms of markets like India and other markets in Asia. Hence, with the new generation model, there would be several changes including meeting future emission norms and preparing for electrification.
For starters, the base of the new Fortuner will not change in the new generation model with the ladder frame chassis being retained for toughness. However, the new Fortuner would be bigger and more spacious than the current one in terms of having a longer wheelbase. The new model will have a Lexus-like design and grille with a more premium look. Crucially the interior would be more modern with a large touch screen and a digital instrument cluster. Plus there would be a panoramic sunroof, ADAS features, and more tech on board.
With premium SUVs getting more feature-rich, the new Fortuner would also be much better equipped and would be loaded with comfort features too. Expect ventilated seats, dual-zone climate control, connected car technology, and a voice assistant.
While off-road will remain the key focus and the toughness, the new platform will include electrification of some kind for its powertrain. In the new generation Fortuner, there would be a mild hybrid diesel powertrain, and no longer would it get a simple diesel engine. The new Fortuner would also get a petrol engine with a hybrid on offer to appeal to markets where diesel is losing appeal. 4x4 and a low-range gearbox would be still there and the Fortuner still would be a hardcore SUV. That said, the new one would be easier to live with and will have electric steering in place of the heavy hydraulic unit.
The new Fortuner with these features would be launched in India next year and maybe Toyota can continue selling the old one alongside. The new model would be a lot more expensive hence it makes sense to sell the old one with it. For now, the next-generation Fortuner will undergo a massive change to meet future demands.
