Maruti Alto K10 Scores Two Stars In GNCAP Crash Test Safety Rating

The other Maruti Suzuki that has been tested is the Wagon R and that has scored less.

The Global NCAP crash-tested the Alto K10, Maruti Suzuki's popular model, and gave it a two-star rating for adult occupant protection. The recent assessment showed marginal improvement in frontal impact protection for the chest and head of adult occupants, along with a stable structure. However, the car demonstrated weak protection for the chest in a side impact.

Nevertheless, the two-star rating is an improvement for the Alto K10, as it outperformed the Wagon R, another Maruti Suzuki model tested by Global NCAP. The Wagon R received one star for adult occupant protection and zero for child occupant protection.

Global NCAP's updated crash test protocols now include assessments of frontal and side impact protection for all tested models, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and pedestrian protection. 

The tested Alto K10 model had standard safety features such as dual front airbags, seat belt pre-tensioners, and front seat belt reminders. The car comes with both petrol and CNG options and is available in both manual and automatic forms, with prices starting at Rs 3.99 lakh onwards for the new generation model.

Under the more stringent tests, small cars' safety is emphasized by offering more safety features as standard, which improves the score along with a stable structure. Six airbags are set to be standard, which will significantly increase the safety of small cars. With the new Alto K10 model's marked improvement, small cars are expected to become safer overall.

Historically, small cars scored less than larger SUVs or sedans due to the lack of safety features as standard. However, that trend is changing with small cars receiving more features to enhance their safety.
