The Jeep Compass is currently available only with a 2.0l diesel engine and earlier it was available with a petrol. Now, while talks of Jeep bringing back a petrol are on, for the South American market, they have introduced a new flagship performance petrol engine. This is a much more powerful 2.0l turbo petrol unit and is a 2.0 Turbo Flex T400 engine.

This is for markets such as Brazil, where Jeep offers a lot of powertrain options. This engine delivers 272 bhp and 400Nm of torque which means it is similar to the bigger Jeeps which also have this powertrain. In the smaller Compass, this would mean serious performance and similar to many performance cars.

This engine is also available in various cars throughout the brand's of the Stellantis group. Hence, this engine finds itself in the Alfa Romeo models and even the Jeep Wrangler.

Interestingly, this 2.0l turbo petrol is also available in the US spec Compass. This engine is paired with a 9 speed automatic and comes with 4x4 as standard. For the South American market, this could be a new flagship trim which would be placed above the current ones.

For the Indian market, this engine while providing immense performance would be too expensive and could be priced more than the diesel. Hence, while Jeep will bring back the Compass petrol, it will be most likely a 1.3l turbo petrol unit which would be cost effective along with being reasonably fuel efficient. There is no fixed timeline for the Compass petrol launch given by Jeep but it is expected to be an important part of the Compass range once launched.
