Stellantis is considering back the Fiat brand in India and that would be a source of joy to the Fiat fans as despite having exited the Indian market sometime back, the brand has a high recall value due to cars like the Linea, Palio and others. However, it has been a long time since Fiat has not been around and mostly we have seen the Jeep brand taking centre stage. Now Fiat could make a comeback to India but not as a sedan or hatchback as it will be an SUV being based on a new platform.

With the new STLA medium platform, Stellantis could bring Jeep, Citroen and Fiat cars being made on the same platform. The new platform is modular and scalable while there would be plug-in hybrid models too. By 2024 there would be two battery chemistries including a nickel cobalt-free alternative.

Stellantis will also bring in cost-efficient batteries while some BEVs based on this platform could have a range as high as 800km. The platform will bring in many new body styles and vehicles which means having Fiat in India would be feasible. Bringing Fiat is also a no-brainer since it is well known in India but it will be a different Fiat from what we have been used to as it will mostly bring in hybrid and electric SUVs.

The new generation Compass and Citroen models will also be based on this platform. Hence, Fiat could be back in India within the next few years but as an EV. Fiat in the past has had various models at the budget end with the Palio hatchback, Punto hatchback and the Linea sedan. It also briefly launched the Abarth performance brand in India while also getting a crossover based on the Punto. Globally Fiat sells many cars and this new global platform will minimize costs and bring three brands under one platform.
