New Delhi: We all want SUVs but the new kind of SUVs getting popular is the smaller variety. Those who are thinking of getting a new hatchback are instead now looking at small SUVs. In many ways, a small micro SUV makes sense for our roads, traffic or being easy to live with. While on one hand, we have bigger subcompact SUVs like the Kia Sonet, the newer smaller kind of SUVs is coming at a more attractive price point. The Renault Kiger is one such car while the latest Tata Punch also joins the line-up. Here is a quick comparison between the two.

Looks

Both flaunt the latest SUV trends of having the headlamps and DRLs different for a premium SUV look. Both as a result look bigger than what they actually are and get a lot of attention. There are other SUV styling bits also being added like roof rails and a small amount of cladding. The Kiger is a bit longer and wider than the Punch but the gap is not that big. Both SUVs do get 16-inch alloy wheels which add to their stance along with dual-tone colour options.

Interiors

The Punch has a different design with more colour thanks to coloured vents and a white panel running across the entire width of the dashboard. The Kiger has a more sober black look across the cabin but also looks sportier nevertheless. In terms of instrument clusters, the Kiger gets a massive screen in the middle while the Punch has a part digital instrument cluster.

Both have decent interior quality along with spacious cabins. Despite the size, both SUVs are comfortable with big boot capacities given as well. The Punch feels a touch airy while the Kiger has a bigger boot. In terms of features, the Kiger has an 8inch touchscreen while the Punch has a 7inch one. Basic features are well covered with smartphone connectivity, climate control, rear-view camera and cruise control etc. That said the Kiger has ambient lighting, wireless charging along wireless smartphone charging.

Engines

The Punch gets a 1.2l petrol for now with 83hp and 113 Nm of torque with a 5-speed manual as standard along with a 5-speed AMT. The Kiger has a 1.0 petrol with 72hp and 96Nm with 5-speed manual/AMT. That said there is also a turbo petrol Kiger with 100hp/160Nm. The turbo petrol gets a 5-speed manual and a CVT auto. Both have drive modes too. The standard petrol engines offer just about decent performance but in the Kiger, it makes sense to get the turbo petrol for its extra performance and smooth CVT. The Punch does not offer that but offers extra with its AMT paired with the 1.2l petrol with an AMT traction mode which helps during low traction situations.

Prices

The Punch starts at Rs 5.4 lakh and goes on till Rs 9.3 lakh. The Kiger meanwhile starts from Rs 5.6 lakh and goes on till Rs 9.8 lakh. The Punch is a good budget option being cheaper plus offers good space along with capability off the road too. The Kiger is more expensive but offers more performance plus more features. Hence decide according to your budget and needs!
