Kalki Avatar: The 'Kalki Avatar' of Lord Vishnu is yet to descend on Earth. It is believed that the Kali Yug will end after the birth of Kalki Avatar, the 10th and final incarnation of Lord Vishnu, which is the most awaited. Kalki symbolises the ultimate cleansing of the world, delivering salvation and heralding a new era of divine truth and purity by establishing the Satya Yug again. When will this avatar take birth on Earth, and what will it look like? Here is everything we know about the Kalki Avatar, as depicted in the Puranas.

Kalki Avatar Story

The Kalki Avatar represents the final incarnation of Lord Vishnu as prophesied in the Puranas, heralding the end of the Kali Yug, the last of the four cyclical ages — Satya, Treta, Dwapar, and Kali — that make up the ongoing cycle of existence in Hindu cosmology. According to religious scriptures, this avatar is envisioned as a divine intervention to purify the world by annihilating the prevailing adharma (unrighteousness) and initiating the Satya Yug, an age of truth and righteousness.

According to legend, the emergence of Kalki is necessitated by a curse placed upon Lord Vishnu by the sage, Bhrigu, whose wife was slain by Vishnu for protecting asuras (demons) from the devas (gods). An angry Bhrigu cursed Lord Vishnu to endure human births and the pain of separation from loved ones. It is this curse that brings Vishnu to Earth in various avatars to combat evil and suffering.

Who Is Kalki Avatar?

According to the Puranas, at the end of Kali Yug, Lord Vishnu will incarnate in the form of Kalki. Sanatan Dharma believes that by incarnating as Kalki, Vishnu will destroy sinners from the Earth and take it on the path of righteousness.

Kalki is often depicted as a mighty warrior riding the white horse, Devadatta, wielding a blazing sword that symbolises the destruction of evil. His arrival is seen as a necessary cataclysm to reset the moral order of the world. The descriptions of Kalki vary across the Puranic texts — some portray him as an invisible force that destroys evil, others depict him as a formidable figure who annihilates those who perpetuate persecution.

In Which Year Kalki Avatar Will Be Born?

According to religious beliefs, Kali Yug began in 3102 BCE. The first phase of Kali Yug began immediately after the departure of Lord Krishna. The Puranas say the Kali Yug is to last on Earth for 4.32 lakh years. This means 5,125 years of Kali Yug have already passed, and 4,26,875 years still remain as of 2024. It is believed that the birth of the Kalki Avatar will occur at the end of Kali Yug.

According to the Puranas, Lord Vishnu's tenth avatar will be born on the fifth day of the bright half of the Shravan month, the Guru, the Sun, and the Moon will enter the Pushya constellation together. He will appear during the transition period between the end of Kali Yuga and the beginning of Satya Yuga.

Where Will Kalki Avatar Come?

According to the Kalki Puran, Lord Vishnu's Kalki Avatar will incarnate in the village of Sambhal in present-day Uttar Pradesh. Sambhal is a city near UP's Moradabad. It's also the district headquarter town that already houses a Kalki temple.

A detailed narrative of Kalki's incarnation is found in the Shrimad Bhagwat Purana, which states that he will be born to a Brahmin named Vishnuyasha in Sambhal.

What Will Happen When Kalki Comes?

In the 16th chapter of the 'Agni Purana', the Kalki Avatar is depicted as an archer mounted on a horse. Kalki will arrive on a white horse named Devadatta and destroy the sinners. This avatar will be endowed with 64 arts. His guru will be the immortal Lord Parashuram, under whose guidance Kalki will meditate on Lord Shiva and acquire divine powers to end unrighteousness. Kalki's mission will be to exterminate those who indulge in sin and to pave the way for the resurgence of Satya Yug.
