Rules For Fasting On Mahashivratri:
- You can observe the Mahashivratri fast as Nirjala (waterless) or with a fruit diet. However, whatever fast you choose, adhere to it completely.
- You can opt for a one-time meal during the fast. In this case, have only one fruit-based meal or a meal without salt.
- Those observing the Mahashivratri fast should consume their meal only after the evening puja of Lord Shiva. Devotees who keep a full-night fast should have their meal after the puja in all four prahars (time divisions) and the next day after sunrise.
- During the Mahashivratri fast, do not consume the bhog offered to the Shivalinga during the puja. You can eat this prasad on the following day.
- People observing the fast on Shivratri should avoid sleeping during the day.
